MichelEyquem,SeigneurdeMontaigne,wasbornin1533,thesonandheirofPierre,SeigneurdeMontaigne(twopreviouschildrendyingsoonafterbirth).HewasbroughtuptospeakLatinashismothertongueandalwaysretainedaLatinturnofmind;thoughheknewGreek,hepreferredtousetranslations.AfterstudyinglawheeventuallybecamecounselortotheParlementofBordeaux.Hemarriedin1565.In1569hepublishedhisFrenchversionoftheNaturalTheologyofRaymondSebond;hisApologyisonlypartlyadefenseofSebondandsetsskepticallimitstohumanreasoningaboutGod,manandnature.Heretiredin1571tohislandsatMontaigne,devotinghimselftoreadingandreflectionandtocomposinghisEssays(firstversion,1580).Heloathedthefanaticismandcrueltiesofthereligiouswarsoftheperiod,butsidedwithCatholicorthodoxyandlegitimatemonarchy.HewastwiceelectedMayorofBordeaux(1581and1583),apostheheldforfouryears.HediedatMontaigne(1592)whilepreparingthefinal,andrichest,editionofhisEssays.
