WolfgangP.Schleich,bornin1957,isheadoftheInstituteofQuantumPhysicsattheUniversityofUlm,Germany,andAdjunctProfessorattheUniversityofNorthTexasinDenton,USA.WhileworkingattheUniversitiesofNewMexico,Albuquerque,ofTexasatAustinandtheMaxPlanckInstituteforQuantumPhysics,Garching,Germany,hehascollaboratedwithworldleadersinphysicssuchasM.O.Scully,J.A.WheelerandH.Walther.ProfessorSchleichhaspublishedmorethan230papersonproblemsofquantumoptics,foundationsofquantummechanicsandgeneralrelativityandistheauthorofthehighlyacclaimedtextbookQuantumOpticsinPhaseSpace.Forhisworkhehasreceivednumerousawardsandhonors,includingtheErnstAbbeMedaloftheInternationalCommissionforOptics,theGottfriedWilhelmLeibnizPrizeoftheGermanScienceFoundationandtheMaxPlanckAward.HeisaFellowoftheInstituteofPhysics,theAmericanPhysicalSocietyandtheOpticalSocietyofAmericaandhasbeenelectedamemberofseveralacademies,suchastheLeopoldina,theHeidelbergAcademyofScience,andtheRoyalDanishAcademyofSciencesandLetters.HerbertWalther(1935-2006)receivedhisPh.D.fromtheUniversityofHeidelbergin1962.AfterworkingatvariousuniversitiesinGermany,FranceandtheUnitedStates,ProfessorWaltheracceptedapostasProfessorofPhysicsattheUniversityofMunichin1975,fromwhichhetookretirementin2003.From1981,ProfessorWaltheralsoworkedfortheMaxPlanckSociety.HefoundedtheMaxPlanckInstituteofQuantumOpticsinGarching,andheadedtheInstituteasitsDirectoruntilhisretirement.From1990to1996,heactedastheMaxPlanckSociety'sVicePresident.ProfessorWaltherwasaFellowandmemberofmanyprofessionalphysicsorganizationsandscientificboards.Hewasawardednumeroushonoursandawards,amongthemtheMaxBornPrize(1978)andtheHumboldtMedal(1998).
