ThisworkexaminestheuniquewayinwhichBenedictdeSpinoza(1632–77)combinestwosignificantphilosophicalprinciples:thatrealexistencerequirescausalpowerandthatgeometricalobjectsdisplayexceptionallyclearlyhowthingshavepropertiesinvirtueoftheiressences.ValtteriViljanenarguesthatunderlyingSpinoza'spsychologyandethicsisacompellingmetaphysicaltheoryaccordingtowhicheachandeverygenuinethingisanentityofpowerendowedwithaninternalstructureakintothatofgeometricalobjects.ThisallowsSpinozatoofferatheoryofexistenceandofaction–humanandnon-humanalike–asdynamicstrivingthattakesplacewiththesamekindofnecessityandintelligibilitythatpertaintogeometry.Viljanen'sfreshandoriginalstudywillinterestawiderangeofreadersinSpinozastudiesandearlymodernphilosophymoregenerally.
