OneoftheremarkablefactsaboutthehistoryofWesterncultureisthatwearestillinapositiontoreadlargeamountsoftheliteratureproducedinclassicalGreeceandRomedespitethefactthatforatleastamillenniumandahalfallcopieshadtobeproducedbyhandandweresubjecttothehazardsoffire,flood,andwar.Thisbookexplainshowthetextssurvivedandgivesanaccountofthereasonswhyitwasthoughtworthwhiletospendthenecessaryefforttopreservethemforfuturegenerations.Inthesecondeditionasectionofnoteswasincluded,andanewchapterwasaddedtodealwithsomeaspectsofscholarshipsincetheRenaissance.Inthethirdedition(1991),theauthorsrespondedtotheurgentneedtotakeaccountoftheverylargenumberofdiscoveriesinthisrapidlyadvancingfieldofknowledgebysubstantiallyrevisingorenlargingcertainsections.Thelasttwodecadeshaveseenfurtheradvances,andthisrevisededitionisdesignedtotakeaccountofthem.
