AhistoryofhowpoliticalphilosophywasrecastbytheriseofpostwarliberalismandirrevocablychangedbyJohnRawls(TM)sATheoryofJusticeIntheShadowofJusticetellsthestoryofhowliberalpoliticalphilosophywastransformedinthesecondhalfofthetwentiethcenturyundertheinfluenceofJohnRawls.Inthisfirst-everhistoryofcontemporaryliberaltheory,KatrinaForrestershowshowliberalegalitarianism"asetofideasaboutjustice,equality,obligation,andthestate"becamedominant,andtracesitsemergencefromthepoliticalandideologicalcontextofthepostwarUnitedStatesandBritain.IntheaftermathofthecivilrightsmovementandtheVietnamWar,Rawls(TM)sATheoryofJusticemadeaparticularkindofliberalismessentialtoliberalphilosophy.Usingarchivalsources,Forresterexploresthisliberalism(TM)sascentandlegacybyexaminingitsoriginsinmidcenturydebatesamongAmericanantistatistsandBritishegalitarians.Shetracestherootsofcontemporarytheoriesofjusticeandinequality,civildisobedience,justwar,globalandintergenerationaljustice,andpopulationethicsinthe1960sand(TM)70sandbeyond.Intheseyears,politicalphilosophersextended,developed,andreshapedthisliberalismastheyrespondedtochallengesandalternativesontheleftandright"fromtheNewInternationalEconomicOrdertotheriseoftheNewRight.Thesethinkersremadepoliticalphilosophy,inwaysthatinfluencednotonlytheirowntrajectory,butalsothatoftheircritics.Recastingthehistoryoflatetwentieth-centurypoliticalthoughtandprovidingnovelinterpretationsandfreshperspectivesonmajorpoliticalphilosophers,IntheShadowofJusticeoffersarigorouslookatliberalism(TM)sambitionsandlimits.
