Plasmaengineeringappliestheuniquepropertiesofplasmas(ionizedgases)toimproveprocessesandperformanceovermanyfields,suchasmaterialsprocessing,spacecraftpropulsion,andnanofabrication.PlasmaEngineeringconsidersthisrapidlyexpandingdisciplinefromaunifiedstandpoint,addressingfundamentalsofphysicsandmodelingaswellasnewreal-wordapplicationsinaerospace,nanotechnology,andbioengineering.Thebookstartsbyreviewingplasmaparticlecollisions,waves,andinstabilities,andproceedstodiagnostictools,suchasplanar,spherical,andemissiveprobes,andtheelectrostaticanalyzer,interferometrictechnique,andplasmaspectroscopy.Thephysicsofdifferenttypesofelectricaldischargesareconsidered,includingtheclassicalTownsendmechanismofgaselectricalbreakdownandthePaschenlaw.Basicapproachesandtheoreticalmethodologiesforplasmamodelingaredescribed,basedonthefluiddescriptionofplasmasolvingnumericallymagnetohydrodynamic(MHD)equationsandthekineticmodelparticletechniquesthattakeintoaccountkineticinteractionsamongparticlesandelectromagneticfields.Readersarethenintroducedtothewidestvarietyofapplicationsinanytextonthemarket.SpacepropulsionapplicationssuchastheHallthruster,pulsedplasmathrusters,andmicrothrusterareexplained.Applicationoflow-temperatureplasmasinnanoscienceandnanotechnology,anotherfrontierinplasmaphysics,iscovered,includingplasma-basedtechniquesforcarbon-basednanoparticlesynthesis(e.g.,fundamentalbuildingblockslikesingle-walledcarbonnanotubesandgraphene).Plasmamedicine,anemergingfieldstudyingplasmasfortherapeuticapplications,isexaminedaswell.Thelatestoriginalresultsoncoldatmosphericplasma(CAP)applicationsinmedicinearepresented,withafocusonthetherapeuticpotentialofCAPwithainselectivetumorcelleradicationandsignalingpathwayderegulation.Itisthefirsttextbookthataddressesplasmaengineeringintheaerospace,nanotechnology,andbioengineeringfieldsfromaunifiedstandpoint.Itincludesalargenumberofworkedexamples,endofchapterexercises,andhistoricalperspectives.ItfeaturesaccompanyingplasmasimulationsoftwarecoveringtheParticleinCell(PIC)approach.
