SirIsaiahBerlinwasborninRiga,Latvia,in1909.In1921hisfamilycametoEngland,andhewaseducatedatStPaul'sSchoolandCorpusChristiCollege,Oxford.AtOxfordhewasaFellowofNewCollege,ProfessorofSocialandPoliticalTheory,andfoundingPresidentofWolfsonCollege.HealsoheldthePresidencyoftheBritishAcademy.AsanexponentofthehistoryofideashewasawardedtheErasmus,LippincottandAgnelliPrizes;healsoreceivedtheJerusalemPrizeforhislifelongdefenceofcivilliberties.HediedinNovember1997.HenryHardy,aFellowofWolfsonCollege,Oxford,isoneofIsaiahBerlin'sLiteraryTrustees.HehaseditedseveralotherbooksbyBerlin.
