FrankWilsonwasanearlycontributortothedevelopmentofperformingartsmedicineintheUnitedStatesandEuropeinthe1980’s.In1986hewasaco-founderandneurologistfortheHealthProgramforPerformingArtistsattheUniversityofCalifornia,SanFrancisco,wherehisinterestfocusedonimpairedhandcontrolinmusicians.In1989hemovedtotheUniversityofDüsseldorfinGermany,whereheheldaone-yearfellowshipasvisitingprofessorofneurologyandwastheorganizerofaresearchteamstudyingfocalhanddystoniainmusicians.FollowinghisreturntoCaliforniain1990,Dr.Wilsoncontinuedhisworkwithperformingartists;hebeganatrialofmusic-learningexperiencesforpatientsintheneurologicalrehabilitationprogramatMt.ZionHospital;andfortwoyearshewastheneurologistonamultidisciplinaryteaminvestigatingupperextremityinjuriesamongtextiledesignersattheLeviStraussCompanyinSanFrancisco.HebecamethemedicaldirectoroftheHealthProgramforPerformingArtistsin1996,andin2001acceptedanappointmentasClinicalProfessorofNeurologyatStanfordUniversitySchoolofMedicine,joiningaclinicalresearchteamatStanfordstudyingdeepbrainstimulationforpatientswithcomplexmovementdisorders.Wilson’scareer-longinterestintheneurologyofhumanhandcontrolisreflectedintwobooksthatexploretheneurologicalandanthropologicalunderpinningsofskilledhanduse.Thefirst,ToneDeafandAllThumbs?waspublishedbyViking-Penguinin1986.Thesecond,TheHand:HowItsUseShapestheBrain,Language,andHumanCulture,waspublishedbyPantheonBooksin1998andwasnominatedthatyearforaPulitzerPrizefornon-fiction.SincethepublicationofTheHand,hehaspresentedhisworkandhisideasatnationalmeetingsofmanyprofessionalorganizations,andtoawidecommunityofartistsandeducatorswhosharetheopinionthatthehumanhandandbrainareananatomicallyandbehaviorallyintegratedsystem–biology’snot-so-secretformulaforindividualhumanintelligence,creativity,andautonomy.,,
