JDSalingerwasbornin1919.HegrewupinNewYorkCity,andwroteshortstoriesfromanearlyage,buthisbreakthroughcamein1948withthepublicationinTheNewYorkerof'APerfectDayforBananafish'.TheCatcherintheRyewashisfirstandonlynovel,publishedin1951.Itremainsoneofthemosttranslated,taughtandreprintedtexts,andhassoldsome65millioncopies.Itwasfollowedbythreeotherbooksofshortstoriesandnovellas,themostrecentofwhichwaspublishedin1963.HelivesinCornish,NewHampshire.--ThistextreferstoanalternateHardcoveredition.
