MatthewGregoryLewis(1775-1818)waseducatedatOxford,afterwhichheheldapositionintheBritishEmbassyatTheHague.ItwastherethathewroteTheMonk,undertheinfluenceoftheearlyGermanromantics.Itspublicationin1796washighlycontroversial,duetobothLewis'newstatusasMPandthenovelitself,whichmanycriticssavagedforitssupposedprofanityandobscenity.AmasterpieceofGothicfiction,TheMonkwasrevisedafterfirstpublicationtoavoidchargesofblasphemy.Thiseditionfeaturestheoriginal,unrevised1796text.
