JeanBodin(1530–1596)wasborninAngers,France,andbecameaFrenchjuristandpoliticalphilosopher,memberoftheParlementofParisandprofessoroflawinToulouse.Heisbestknownforhistheoryofsovereignty(seeDivineRightofKings).BodinlivedduringtheReformation,writingagainstthebackgroundofreligiousandcivilconflict—particularlythat,inhisnativeFrance,betweenthe(Calvinist)Huguenotsandthestate-supportedCatholicChurch.HeremainedaCatholicthroughouthislifebutwascriticalofpapalauthorityandwassometimesaccusedofcrypto-Calvinism.Towardstheendofhislifehewroteadialoguebetweendifferentreligions,includingrepresentativesofJudaism,Islamandnaturaltheology,inwhichallagreedtocoexistinconcord.Hisbooksdividedopinion:someFrenchwriterswerefullofpraise,whilethelaterScottishphilosopher,FrancisHutchinsonwashisdetractor,criticisinghismethodology.
