StephenCrane(November1,1871–June5,1900)wasanAmericannovelist,poetandjournalist.Theeighthsurvivingchildofhighlydevoutparents—hisfatherwasaMethodistministerandhismotherwasamemberoftheWoman'sChristianTemperanceUnion—CranewasmostlyraisedbyhisoldersiblingsinvariouspartsofNewJersey.Afterattendingseveralpost-secondaryinstitutions,includingClaverackCollege,LafayetteCollege,andSyracuseUniversity,heleftschoolingbehindandtraveledtoNewYorktoworkasareporterofslumlife.Crane'sfirstnovelwas1893'sMaggie:AGirloftheStreets,whichhefollowedwithnumerousshortstories,poems,andaccountsofwar,allofwhichearnedhimpraisebutdidnotbringhimthegreatacclaimhereceivedforhis1895CivilWarnovelTheRedBadgeofCourage.Capitalizingonthenovel'ssuccess,Cranebecameahighlypaidwarcorrespondent,coveringconflictsinGreeceandCubafornewspapertycoonsWilliamRandolphHearstandJosephPulitzer.DuringthelastyearofhislifehetookrefugeinthesouthofEngland,wherehelivedwithhiscommon-lawwife,CoraTaylor,theformermadamofaJacksonvillebrothel.Plaguedbyexhaustionandillhealth,StephenCranediedoftuberculosisinasanatoriumintheBlackForestattheageoftwenty-eight.TodayheisconsideredoneofthemostinnovativewriterstoemergeintheUnitedStatesduringthe1890sandoneofthefoundersofLiteraryrealism.
