ShelSilverstein'sveryfirstchildren'sbook Lafcadio,theLionWhoShotBack waspublishedin1963,andfollowedthenextyearbytwootherbooks.Thefirstofthose, TheGivingTree, isamovingstoryabouttheloveofatreeforaboy;ittookfouryearsbeforeHarperChildren'sbooksdecidedtopublishit.Shelreturnedtohumourthatsameyearwith AGiraffeandaHalf. Hisfirstcollectionofpoemsanddrawings, WheretheSidewalkEnds, appearedin1974,andhissecond, ALightintheAttic, in1981. WhenhewasaG.I.inJapanandKoreainthe1950,helearnedtoplaytheguitarandtowritesongs,including'ABoyNamedSue'forJohnnyCash.In1984,SilversteinwonaGrammyAwardforBestChildren'sAlbumfor WheretheSidewalkEnds -'recited,sungandshouted'bytheauthor.Hewasalsoanaccomplishedplaywright,includingthe1981hit,'TheLadyortheTigerShow.'Thelastbooktobepublishedbeforehediedin1999,was FallingUp (1996).
