JonathanSwift'sclassicsatiricalnarrativewasfirstpublishedin1726,sevenyearsafterDefoe'sRobinsonCrusoe(oneofitsfewrivalsinfameandbreadthofappeal).Asaparodytravel-memoiritreportsonextraordinarylandsandsocieties,whosenameshaveenteredtheEnglishlanguage:notablytheminuteinhabitantsofLilliput,thegiantsofBrobdingnag,andtheYahoosinHouyhnhnmland,wheretalkinghorsesarethedominantspecies.Itsparesnovestedinterestfromitsirreverentwit,anditsattackonpoliticalandfinancialcorruption,aswellasabusesinscience,continuetoresonateinourowntimes.

作者简介

JonathanSwiftwasborninDublinin1667,afterthedeathofhisfather.AcousinofDryden,hewaseducatedatTrinityCollege,Dublin,andformuchofhisearlylifetravelledfrequentlybetweenIrelandandEngland.SwiftbecameincreasinglyoccupiedwithIrishaffairs,andwroteagreatnumberofworksincludingcelebratedsatireslike‘ATaleofaTub'andAModestProposal',politicalpamphletsandGulliver'sTravels–allinformedbyhissenseoftheWhigs'unfairtreatmentofIreland.Nearlyallofhisworkswerepublishedanonymously,andheonlyreceivedpaymentforGulliver'sTravels.Hedied,afteralongillnessin1745.
