JonathanSwiftwasborninDublinin1667,afterthedeathofhisfather.AcousinofDryden,hewaseducatedatTrinityCollege,Dublin,andformuchofhisearlylifetravelledfrequentlybetweenIrelandandEngland.SwiftbecameincreasinglyoccupiedwithIrishaffairs,andwroteagreatnumberofworksincludingcelebratedsatireslike‘ATaleofaTub'andAModestProposal',politicalpamphletsandGulliver'sTravels–allinformedbyhissenseoftheWhigs'unfairtreatmentofIreland.Nearlyallofhisworkswerepublishedanonymously,andheonlyreceivedpaymentforGulliver'sTravels.Hedied,afteralongillnessin1745.
