DavidFosterWallacewasborninIthaca,NewYork,in1962andraisedinIllinois,wherehewasaregionallyrankedjuniortennisplayer.HereceivedbachelorofartsdegreesinphilosophyandEnglishfromAmherstCollegeandwrotewhatwouldbecomehisfirstnovel,TheBroomoftheSystem,ashisseniorEnglishthesis.HereceivedamastersoffineartsfromUniversityofArizonain1987andbrieflypursuedgraduateworkinphilosophyatHarvardUniversity.Hissecondnovel,InfiniteJest,waspublishedin1996.WallacetaughtcreativewritingatEmersonCollege,IllinoisStateUniversity,andPomonaCollege,andpublishedthestorycollectionsGirlwithCuriousHair,BriefInterviewswithHideousMen,andOblivionandtheessaycollectionsASupposedlyFunThingI'llNeverDoAgainandConsidertheLobster.HewasawardedtheMacArthurFellowship,aLannanLiteraryAward,andaWhitingWriters'Award,andwasappointedtotheUsagePanelforTheAmericanHeritageDictionaryoftheEnglishLanguage.Hediedin2008.Hislastnovel,ThePaleKing,waspublishedin2011.
