HenryDavidThoreauHenryDavidThoreau,Writer/Peacenik,(bornJuly12,1817,Concord,Mass.,U.S.-diedMay6,1862,Concord).Aformerschoolteacher,Thoreauspenttwoyearsinthe1840slivinginahutbesideWaldenPondinMassachusetts,wherehestudiednatureandwrotepeacefulessaysandpoems.Hisjournaloftheseyearsbecamehismostfamouswork:Walden,oraLifeintheWoods(published1854).ThoreaualsowroteCivilDisobedience(1849),advocatingnon-violentresistancetounethicalgovernments;thesamenotionwaslateradvocatedbyGandhiandMartinLutherKing,Jr.Alwaysahitwithcollegereaders,Thoreaubecameapopiconforanti-warandpro-environmentgroupslateinthe20thcentury.
