MaryAnneEvanswasbornnearNuneatonon22November1819.SheadoptedthepseudonymGeorgeEliotwhenshebeganherwritingcareer.Inheryouthshewasheavilyinfluencedbyherevangelicalteachersbutshelaterbrokewithorthodoxreligion.AftershemovedtoCoventrywithherfatherin1841,sheundertookthetaskoftranslatingD.F.Strauss'scontroversialbookLifeofJesusCriticallyExamined(1846)forCharlesBray.Afterherfather'sdeathshemovedtoLondonandhelpedtoedittheradicaljournaltheWestminsterReviewfrom1851to1854.In1851shealsometthejournalistGeorgeHenryLewesand,despiteLewes'smarriage,theybecamepartnersfortherestofhislife.In1854LewesandEliotopenlysetuphometogether,ascandalousarrangementbythesocialstandardsoftheday.In1857EliotpublishedScenesfromClericalLifeinBlackwood'sMagazineandin1859hernovelAdamBedewaspublishedtogreatacclaimandestablishedherasabestsellingauthor.Herfirstattempttowritehermostfamousnovel,Middlemarch,endedinfailure.Abandoningit,shebeganashortnovellaentitledMissBrookewhicheventuallybecamepartofthefinalversionofMiddlemarch,whichwaspublishedseriallyin1871.Lewesdiedin1878and,in1880,EliotmarriedJohnWalterCross,anAmericanwhowastwentyyearsherjunior.GeorgeEliotdiedon22December1880andisburiedinHighgateCemeterynexttoLewes.
