EricArthurBlair(GeorgeOrwell)wasbornin1903inIndia,wherehisfatherworkedfortheCivilService.ThefamilymovedtoEnglandin1907andin1917OrwellenteredEton,wherehecontributedregularlytothevariouscollegemagazines.From1922to1927heservedwiththeIndianImperialPoliceinBurma,anexperiencethatinspiredhisfirstnovel,BurmeseDays(1934).Severalyearsofpovertyfollowed.HelivedinParisfortwoyearsbeforereturningtoEngland,whereheworkedsuccessivelyasaprivatetutor,schoolteacherandbookshopassistant,andcontributedreviewsandarticlestoanumberofperiodicals.DownandOutinParisandLondonwaspublishedin1933.In1936hewascommissionedbyVictorGollancztovisitareasofmassunemploymentinLancashireandYorkshire,andTheRoadtoWiganPier(1937)isapowerfuldescriptionofthepovertyhesawthere.Attheendof1936OrwellwenttoSpaintofightfortheRepublicansandwaswounded.HomagetoCataloniaishisaccountofthecivilwar.Hewasadmittedtoasanatoriumin1938andfromthenonwasneverfullyfit.HespentsixmonthsinMoroccoandtherewroteComingUpforAir.DuringtheSecondWorldWarheservedintheHomeGuardandworkedfortheBBCEasternServicefrom1941to1943.AsliteraryeditoroftheTribunehecontributedaregularpageofpoliticalandliterarycommentary,andhealsowrotefortheObserverandlaterfortheManchesterEveningNews.Hisuniquepoliticalallegory,AnimalFarmwaspublishedin1945,anditwasthisnovel,togetherwithNineteenEighty-Four(1949),whichbroughthimworld-widefame.GeorgeOrwelldiedinLondoninJanuary1950.
