SylviaPlathwasbornin1932inMassachusetts.HerbooksincludethepoetrycollectionsTheColossus,CrossingtheWater,WinterTrees,Ariel,andTheCollectedPoems,whichwonthePulitzerPrize.Plathiscreditedwithbeingapioneerofthe20th-centurystyleofwritingcalledconfessionalpoetry.Herpoem"Daddy"isoneofthebest-knownexamplesofthisgenre.In1963,Plath'ssemi-autobiographicnovelTheBellJarwaspublishedunderthepseudonym"VictoriaLucas";itwasreissuedin1966underherownname.AcompleteanduncutfacsimileeditionofArielwaspublishedin2004withheroriginalselectionandarrangementofpoems.ShewasmarriedtothepoetTedHughes,withwhomshehadadaughter,Frieda,andason,Nicholas.ShediedinLondonin1963.
