AndreasWimmer'sresearchbringsalongtermandgloballycomparativeperspectivetothequestionsofhowstatesarebuiltandnationsformed,howindividualsdrawethnicandracialboundariesbetweenthemselvesandothers,andwhichkindsofpoliticalconflictsandwarresultsfromtheseprocesses.Usingnewmethodsanddata,hecontinuestheoldsearchforhistoricalpatternsthatrepeatacrosscontextsandtimes.Hehaspursuedthisagendaacrossthedisciplinaryfieldsofsociology,politicalscience,andsocialanthropologyandthroughvariousstylesofinquiry:fieldresearchinOaxaca(Mexico)andIraq,comparativehistoricalanalysis,quantitativecross-nationalresearch,networkstudies,formalmodeling,theanalysisoflarge-scalesurveydata,aswellaspolicyorientedresearch.AndreasWimmerwaseducatedattheUniversityofZurich,fromwherehereceivedaPhDinsocialanthropologyin1992andahabilitationtwoyearslater.HejoinedColumbiaUniversityin2015astheLieberProfessorofSociologyandPoliticalPhilosophy.HeprevioulytaughtatPrincetonUniversity,wherehealsoservedasdirectoroftheFungGlobalFellowsProgram,andattheUniversityofCaliforniaLosAngeles(from2003to2012).BeforemovingtotheUnitedStates,Wimmerwasfoundingdirectoroftwointerdisciplinaryresearchinstitutes:theSwissForumforMigrationandPopulationStudiesattheUniversityofNeuchâtel(from1995to1999)andtheDepartmentofPoliticalandCulturalChangeattheCenterforDevelopmentResearchoftheUniversityofBonn(from1999to2002).
