Victor-MarieHugowasbornon26February1802atBesan?on,wherehisfather,anofficerunderNapoleon,wasstationed.Afterhisparentsseparatedin1812,HugolivedinPariswithhismotherandbrothers.AttwentyhemarriedAdeleFoucherandpublishedhisfirstpoetrycollection.HugowaselectedtotheAcademieFrancaisein1841.Theaccidentaldeathtwoyearslaterofhiseldestdaughterandherhusbanddevastatedhimandmarkedtheendofhisfirstliteraryperiod.Bythenpoliticshadbecomecentraltohislife.ThoughhewasaRoyalistinhisyouth,hisviewsbecameincreasinglyliberalaftertheJulyrevolutionof1830.HeinitiallysupportedLouisNapoleon,butturnedagainsthimafterbeingdeniedaroleingovernmentfollowingthecoupd’étatof1851andwasforcedintoexileinBrusselsandJersey.AfterthefalloftheSecondEmpirein1870,HugoreturnedtoFranceandwasre-electedtotheNationalAssembly,andthentotheSenate.Hugoiscelebratedasapolitician,asocialcampaigner,apoetandanovelist.HismostfamousworksincludeNotreDamedeParis(1831)andLesMisérables(1862).VictorHugodiedon22May1885andhisstatefuneralwasattendedbythousandsofmourners.JulieRoselivesinSydneyandisthehighlyregardedtranslatorofmorethanadozenworks,includinganacclaimedversionofRacine'sPhèdreaswellasworksbyPaulVirilio,JacquesRancière,ChantalThomas,andmanyothers.
