JohnBunyanwasbornin1628.In1644hewascaughtupintheCivilWaranddraftedintotheParliamentaryarmy.Fouryearslaterheenteredaperiodofintensespiritualstruggle(chronicledinGraceAboundingtotheChiefofSinners),afterwhichheemergedanewman.HejoinedaNonconformistchurchandbegantopreach.BunyanspentmanyyearsinprisonbecauseofhisfaithandduringthistimebeganwritingThePilgrim'sProgress.Thefirstpartwaspublishedin1678andthesecondpart,togetherwiththewholework,waspublishedin1684.Bunyandiedin1688.
