JonathanSwiftwasbornin1667,thesonofAnglo-Irishparents.AfteraneducationinIreland,SwiftmovedtoEnglandwherehereluctantlychoseacareerinthechurch.There,heworkedforSirWilliamTemple,inwhosehouseholdhemetEstherJohnson.Thetwofellinlove,butwereneverpubliclymarried.WhileinEngland,Swiftdiscoveredhistalentsasasatirist,producingtextssuchas"ATaleOfATub"and"TheBattleoftheBooks"(1704).Atagethirty-one,SwiftreturnedtoIrelandaschaplaintoalordjustice.Swiftmaintainedhisenergyandwitand,laterinlife,wrote"AModestProposal"(1729)andGULLIVER'STRAVELS(1726).SwiftdiedonOctober19,1745.
