作者简介

JamesJoyce,thetwentiethcentury’smostinfluentialnovelist,wasborninDublinonFebruary2,1882.Theoldestoftenchildren,hegrewupinafamilythatwentfromprosperitytopenurybecauseofhisfather’swastrelbehavior.AfterreceivingarigorousJesuiteducation,twenty-year-oldJoycerenouncedhisCatholicismandleftDublinin1902tospendmostofhislifeasawriterinexileinParis,Trieste,Rome,andZurich.OnonetripbacktoIreland,hefellinlovewiththenowfamousNoraBarnacleonJune16,thedayhelaterchoseas“Bloomsday”inhisnovelUlysses.NarawasanuneducatedGalwaygirlwhobecamehislifelongcompanionanthemotherofhistwochildren.Indebtanddrinkingheavily,Joycelivedforthirty-sixyearsontheContinent,supportinghimselffirstbyteachingjobs,thentroughthepatronageofMrs.HaroldMcCormick(EdithRockerfeller)andtheEnglishfeministandeditorHarrietShawWeaver.HiswritingsincludeChambermusic(1907),Dubliners(1914),APortraitoftheArtistasaYoungMan(1916),Exiles(1918),Ulysses(1922),PoemsPenyeach(1927),FinnegansWake(1939),andanearlydraftofAPortraitofaYoungMan,StephanHero(1944).Ulyssesrequiredsevenyearstocomplete,andhismasterpiece,FinnegansWake,tookseventeen.Bothworksrevolutionizedtheform,structure,andcontentofthenovel.JoycediedinZurichin1941.,,,
