ThomasHardywasa19th-centurynovelistand20th-centurypoet.Hewasbornin1840inthevillageofHigherBockhampton.Hismotherwasawell-readwomanwhotaughtThomasathomeuntilhewaseightyearsoldandabletobeginschool.HisfatherwasastonemasonHardy\'sfamilydidn\'thaveenoughmoneytosendhimtouniversity,soattheageofsixteenhebegantrainingwithalocalarchitect.HemovedtoLondonin1862,buthedidn\'tfeelcomfortablethere.Asthesonofaworkingman,heoftenfeltlikeanoutsiderinmiddle-classsoaety.HisworkasanarchitecttookhimtoCornwallin1870,wherehewasaskedtorebuildabeautifuloldchurch.There,hemetEmmaGifford,whobecamehisfirstwife.Atthatpoint,Hardyhadbeenwritingnovelsforseveralyears,buthedidnotfindsuccessuntilhisfourthbook,FarfromtheMaddingCrowd（1874）.Thisnovelbroughthimenoughmoneytobeabletogiveuphisjobasanarchitect.Intheautumnof1874,ThomasandEmmaweremarried,andnineyearslater,theymovedtoahouseinDorsetthatHardyhaddesignedhimself.Unfortunately,theirmarriagequicklybecameunhappy,andforyearsthecouplerarelyspoketoeachother.Duringtheseyears,Hardycontinuedtowritenovels,oftenstoriesthatcritiasedsociety,marriageandreligion.Thiswasespeaallytrueofhislasttwonovels,whicharethoughttobehisbest：Tessofthed\'Urbervilles(1891）andIudetheObscure(1895）.In1896,Hardystoppedwritingfictionandturnedhi.sfullattentiontopoetry,whichhehadalwayspreferred.HismostsuccessfulcollectionwasPoemsof1912-1913.ThesepoemswerewrittenafterEmma\'sdeath,in1912,andmostofthemexpressdeepsadnessandregretasHardylookedbackattheirlifetogether.In1914,hemarriedhissecretary,FlorenceDugdale,whowasthirty-nineyearsyoungerthanhewas.Hardycontinuedtopublishpoetrywellintohiseightiesandhisworkwasgreatlyadmiredbymany20th-centurywriterssuchasD.H.Lawrence,RobertFrostandVirginiaWoolf.In1910,HardyreceivedtheOrderofMeritandwasnominatedfortheNobelPrizeinLiterature.Hewasnominatedagainin1921,butwasneverawinner.ThomasHardydiedin1928.HisashesweretakentoPoet\'sCornerinWestminsterAbbey,whereEngland\'sgreatestwritersarehonoured.However,hisheartwasremovedandburiedinDorsetwithEmma.
