Bodin`sSixlivresdelarepubiqueisavastsynthesisofcomparaitvepubliclawandpolitics.thetheoreticalcoreofwhichisformedbythefourchapterstranslatedinthisvolume.Thesecontainhiscelebratedtheoryofsovereignty，whichinformedhisthinkingonthestateandmadehisRepubliquealandmarkinthedevelopmentofEuropeanthought.Thistheory，however，alsoncludedaseductivebuterroneousthesisthatwasofgreatimpwrtanceforthedevelopmentofroyalistideology：theideathatsovereigntyisindivisible，thattheentirepowerofthestatehastobevestedinasingleindividualorgroup.Thisthesis，togetherwiththecrisisofauthorityintheFrenchreligiouswars，ledBodintoasystimaticallyabsolutistinterpretationoftheFrenchandothercontemporarymonarchies.Hisprimaryaimwastoexcludeanylegalgroudofforcibleresistance.AkingofFrance，hehoped，wouldcontinuetoadheretomoralandprudentiallimitations，butaproperking，heinsisted，couldnotbelawfullyconstrained.
