WhenPucciniwasinspiredtowriteMadamaButterfly,hewasatthepeakofhisfame,idolizedasthecomposerofthreegreatoperaticsuccesses,ManonLescaut,LaBohemeandTosca.HisinspirationwasaLondonproductionofDavidBelasco\'sAmericanplayMadamButterfly,inwhosepoignantlovestoryPuccinisawtheelementsthatinvariablydrewhisinterestasacomposer:astrongtheatricalsituationinvolvingaheroineindistress.WithhislibrettistsIllicaandGiacosa,PuccinibeganworkonMadamaButterflyin1902.TheoperareceiveditsfirstproductionatLaScalainMilanin1904,butitwasnotuntilthefollowingyearthatitsgoldenfuturewouldbecomeapparent.ACoventGardenproductionfeaturingtwoofthegreatestsingersofthedayintheleadingroles-EmmyDestinnasButterflyandEnricoCarusoasPinkerton--broughtLondontoitsfeet.When,ayearlater,itwasproducedwithequalsuccessattheMetropolitanOperainNewYork,MadamaButterflybeganitslongreignasoneofthegreatestfavoritesoftheoperaticrepertoire.Thisfinelymadefull-scoreeditionofMadamaButterflyisreprintedfromtheauthoritativeeditionoriginallypublishedbyG.Ricordi,Milan.Withit,studentsandloversofoperacanstudyintimatelyamasterpieceofthegenre,widelyadmiredforitsmelodicrichnessandgloriousorchestralscoring.
