Lavoisier'stheorieswerepromulgatedwidelybyaworkhepublishedin1789:TraitéélémentairedeChimie.ThefamousEnglishtranslationbyRobertKerrwasissuedayearlater.Incorporatingthenotionsofthe"newchemistry,"thebookcarefullydescribestheexperimentsandreasoningwhichledLavoisiertohisconclusions,conclusionswhichweregenerallyacceptedbythescientificcommunityalmostimmediately.ItisnottoomuchtoclaimthatLavoisier'sTraitédidforchemistrywhatNewton'sPrincipiadidforphysics,andthatLavoisierfoundedmodernchemistry.
PartOneoftheTraitécoversthecompositionoftheatmosphereandwater,andrelatedexperiments,oneofwhich(onvinousfermentation)permitsLavoisiertomakethefirstexplicitstatementofthelawoftheconservationofmatterinchemicalchange.Thesecondpartdealswiththecompoundsofacidswithvariousbases,givingextensivetablesofcompounds.Itsmostsignificantitem,however,isthetableofsimplesubstancesorelements—thefirstmodernlistofthechemicalelements.Thethirdsectionofthebookreviewsinminutedetailtheapparatusandinstrumentsofchemistryandtheiruses.Someoftheseinstruments,etc.areillustratedinthesectionofplatesattheend.
