Continuum Mechanics

Themechanicsoffluidsandthemechanicsofsolidsrepresentthetwomajorareasofphysicsandappliedmathematicsthatmeetincontinuummechanics,afieldthatformsthefoundationofcivilandmechanicalengineering.Thisunifiedapproachtotheteachingoffluidandsolidmechanicsfocusesonthegeneralmechanicalprinciplesthatapplytoallmaterials.Studentswhohavefamiliarizedthemselveswiththebasicprinciplescangoontospecializeinanyofthedifferentbranchesofcontinuummechanics.Thistextopenswithintroductorychaptersonmatrixalgebra,vectorsandCartesiantensors,andananalysisofdeformationandstress.Succeedingchaptersexaminethemathematicalstatementsofthelawsofconservationofmass,momentum,andenergyaswellastheformulationofthemechanicalconstitutiveequationsforvariousclassesoffluidsandsolids.Inadditiontomanyworkedexamples,thisvolumefeaturesagradedselectionofproblems(withanswers,whereappropriate).Gearedtowardundergraduatestudentsofappliedmathematics,itwillalsoprovevaluabletophysicistsandengineers.
