D.H.LawrencewasbornonSeptember11,1885,inEastwood,Nottinghamshire,England.Hisfatherwasacoalminer,hismotheraformerlaceworkerandunsuccessfulhaberdasher.Hebeganschooljustbeforetheageoffour,butrespiratoryillnessandaweakconstitutionforcedhimtoremainhomeintermittently.Twomonthsbeforehissixteenthbirthday,hewenttoworkasaclerkinabadlyventilatedfactorythatmademedicalsupplies,andeventuallycontractedpneumonia.Afteralongconvalescence,hegotajobasastudentteacher,butprivatelyheresolvedtobecomeapoet.Hebeganwritingseriouslyin1906andenteredUniversityCollege,Nottingham,toearnhisteacher'scertificate.Twoyearslaterhestartedteachingelementaryschoolfull-time.HepublishedhisfirstpoemsintheEnglishReviewin1909.Whenhecontractedpneumoniaasecondtime,hegaveupteaching.Hisfirsttwonovels,TheWhitePeacockandTheTrespasser,werepublishedin1911and1912.AboutthreeweeksafterthepublicationofTheTrespasser,heleftEnglandwithFriedaWeekley,néevonRichthofen,theGermanwifeofErnestWeekley,aBritishlinguistwhohadbeenhisFrenchandGermaninstructoratUniversityCollege.HewrotethefinalversionofhisautobiographicalnovelSonsandLovers(1913)-begunwhenhismotherwasdyingofcancerin1910-duringhisyear-longcourtshipofFriedainGermanyandItaly.SonsandLoverswasimmediatelyrecognizedasthefirstgreatmodernrestatementoftheOedipaldrama,but,likemostofLawrence'snovelsduringhislifetime,soldpoorly.LawrenceandFriedamarriedinLondoninJuly1914,immediatelyafterFrieda'sdivorcebecamefinal;theylivedperipateticallyandinrelativepoverty.TheyspentWorldWarIinEngland,acountrytheybothessentiallydisliked,andenduredaseriesofclumsysurveillanceandharassmentcampaignsbylocalpolicebecauseofhernationality(severalofherrelativeswerediplomats,statesmen,andpoliticians,andshewasacousinofManfredvonRichthofen,the"RedBaron")andhisapparentlackofpatriotism(amongothercharges,ThePrussianOfficer,acollectionofstories,publishedinNovember1914,severalmonthsafterGreatBritainenteredthewar,wasconsideredpoliticallyandmorallyoffensivebyconservativebooksellers).Exemptfromactiveservicebecauseofhishealth,LawrencewroteTheRainbowandWomeninLove.TheformerwasseizedandburnedbythepoliceforindecencyinNovember1915,twomonthsafterpublication;Lawrencewasunabletofindapublisherforthelatteruntilsixyearslater.CompositionofthesetwonovelscoincidedwithboutsoferraticbehaviorinLawrencethatborderedonmentalinstability,sexualconfusionandexperimentationthatthreatenedtounderminehismarriage,andendlesshealthreversals,includingadiagnosisoftuberculosis.TwilightinItaly,acollectionofacerbictravelessaysbelievedbysometoshowasympathyforfascismthatbecamemoreexplicitin,forexample,hisnovelThePlumedSerpent(1926),waspublishedin1916.Herecordedthevicissitudesofhismarriageinanautobiographicalpoemcycle,Look!WeHaveComeThrough(1917).TheLawrencesdepartedforEuropeinlate1919andspentmostofthenexttwoyearsinItalyandGermany.TheLostGirl,anovel,waspublishedin1920andreceivedtheJamesTaitBlackMemorialPrizethefollowingyear,whichalsosawthepublicationofMovementsinEuropeanHistory,atextforschoolchildren;PsychoanalysisandtheUnconscious,ananti-Freudiantract;Tortoises,acollectionofpoems;SeaandSardinia,atravelbook;and,belatedly,WomeninLove.Earlyin1922heandFriedawentaroundtheworldbyboat.TheyvisitedCeylon,livedinAustraliaforamonthandahalf,andinthesummersailedtoAmerica,wheretheysettledinNewMexico.Aaron'sRod,anovel;FantasiaoftheUnconscious,asequeltoPsychoanalysisandtheUnconscious;andEngland,MyEngland,acollectionofstories,werepublishedthatyear.Inthespringof1923,aftermovingtoMexico,heandFriedaseparatedtemporarily.HetouredthewesternUnitedStatesandbrieflyreturnedtoMexico;shemovedtoLondon.Kangaroo,hisnovelofAustralia,andBirds,Beasts,andFlowers,acollectionofpoems,werepublishedinthefall.HereunitedwithFriedainthewinter.TheywenttoNewMexicoagaininthespringof1924;hesufferedboutsofinfluenza,malaria,andtyphoidfeverthenextyear.TheLawrenceseventuallyresettledinItalyin1926.Hebeganwritinghislastnovel,LadyChatterley'sLover,in1926.ItwaspublishedtwoyearslaterandbannedinEnglandandtheUnitedStatesaspornographic.Lawrencewasanavidamateurpainter,andaselectionofhispaintings-grosslyrendered,full-figuredrepresentationalnudes-wasexhibitedinLondonin1929.TheshowwasraidedonJuly5bythepolice,whoremovedthirteenofthecanvases.LawrencecoincidentallysufferedaviolenttubercularhemorrhageinItalythesameday.HewenttoBavariatoundergoacure-itwasunsuccessful-andin1930enteredasanatoriuminVence,France,wheretreatmentsimilarlyfailed.HediedinavillainVenceonthenightofMarch2,ahalfyearshortofhisforty-fifthbirthday,andwasburiedinalocalcemetery.Hisbodywaseventuallydisinterredandcremated,andhisashestransportedtoFriedaLawrence'sranchoutsideTaos,NewMexico.Inadditiontonumerousplays,collectionsofpoetry,andother,lesser-knownworkspublishedduringhislifetime,hisnovelsTheVirginandtheGypsyandMr.Noonwerepublishedposthumously.FromtheTradePaperbackedition.,,
