RonaldKeithWilliamson'searlylifeappearedcharmed.Asuccessfulschoolandcollegebaseballplayer,heseemedtohaveaworldofopportunityathisfeet.But,afterinjuryputpaidtohissportingcareer,heslowlybegantoshowsignsofmentalillness,anddriftedintoalifeofpettycrimeandmisdemeanour.Whenin1982alocalgirlwasfoundrapedandmurdered,hewasinprisonservingtimeforkitingcheques.Whilstthere,anotherprisoner,lookingforrelease,allegedhehadoverheardhimconfessingtothekilling,andWilliamsonwasarrestedforthecrime.WhatfollowedwasoneofthemostappallingcasesofamiscarriageofjusticeAmericahaseverseen.Fromthepointofhisarrest,Williamsonwastauntedbyprisonguardswhoheldbackthemedicineshewasprescribedtocontrolhispsychiatricproblems,meaningthatwhenitcametotrialhewasdistressedandnotlucid.Atthetrialitselfhewasnevergivenfairrepresentation-hislawyerwasnotonlyblind,buthadalsoneverhandledacriminalcasebefore,andneverenteredapleaonWilliamson'sbehalf,thathewasnotfittostandtrial.Williamsonwasfoundguilty,andsentencedtodeath.Despitemanyappeals,hewasfinalgivenadateforhisexecution-Sept24th1994.Itwasonlyduetothelastminuteinterventionbyagroupofappellatelawyersworkingonhisbehalf,whosoughtawritfromthedistrictcourtjudge,thathewasgivenastayofexecutionoffivedays.Here,forthefirsttime,Grishamdelvesintothisstory,tracingtheman,thecaseandthetrial,andshowinghow,thankstothisteamofdedicatedlegalprofessionals,therealtruthaboutthecasecametolight.EvidencesurfacedtocompletelyexhonorateWilliamson,andhewasfreedinApril1999.Helaterwonasettlementincourtforhisconviction,butsadlypassedawaylastyear.
