Theevergrowingcomplexityofmoderndistributedinformationsystemsandthedifficultyinforeseeingallpotentialdisturbancesmaketheapplicabilityofmulti-agentsystems(MAS)inthisdomainveryappealing.Despitethemanyresearcheffortsofthelastdecade,agenttechnologyisslowtofinditswayintolarge-scaleinformation-richapplications.ThisshortcomingcanbelargelyattributedtothetechnicalchallengesfacingtheintroductionofMAStomLssion-criticalcoreapplications.ThemostpressingtechnicalissuehereisthelackofrobustnessinexistingMASarchitectures.ThisworkenhancestherobustnessofMASappliedintheinformationsystemsdomainthroughanunderlyingmiddleware;thismiddlewareprovidesformalguaranteesontherobustnessofthesystembyitselfandindependentlyoftheoriginalstructureoftheMASarchitecture.Muchoftoday'sprogressinITisduetointerdisciplinaryapproaches-ortochangingviewpointsonaparticularproblem.Thismonographisanexcellentexampleotsuchaninterdisciplinaryapproachthatbringstogetherdatabaseknowledgerarelyconcernedwithagents,andagenttechniquesthathavehadlittletodowithdatabasetechnology.
