DrAnnaMiddletonisaConsultantResearchGeneticCounsellorandPrincipalInvestigatorworkingattheInstituteofMedicalGenetics,SchoolofMedicine,CardiffUniversity.ShereceivedherMScinGeneticCounsellingfromtheUniversityofManchesterin1995,andwasawardedaPhDin2000fromtheUniversityofLeeds;herthesisinvolvedgatheringtheattitudesofdeafandhardofhearingpeopletowardspre-natalgenetictestingforinheriteddeafness.ShewasalsoawardedregistrationwiththeGeneticCounsellorRegistrationBoardin2003.ShehasworkedasageneralgeneticcounselloratStJames'sHospitalinLeeds(2000-2001)andaspecialistcancergeneticcounselloratAddenbrooke'sHospitalinCambridge(2001-2005).Sincethen,shehasrunaDepartmentofHealthfunded,nationalresearchprojectwhichinvolvedcollectingtheviewsandbeliefsofdeafandhardofhearingpeopletowardsgeneticcounselling,accesstohealthservicesandattitudestowardscommunicationwithhealthprofessionals.Shehaspreviouslybeeninvitedtodiscusstheimplicationsofresearchaswellasnationalissuesrelevanttodeafandhardofhearingpeopleontheradio(e.g.BBCRadioWales,BBCWorldService,RadioCardiff),TV(e.g.BBCSeeHear,Channel4V-TV,CNNnews,ITVLookNorth)andforarticlespublishedonissuesaboutdeafness(e.g.Nature,Telegraph,WesternMail).AnnaMiddletonhaspublishedextensivelyintheacademicliteratureondeafnessandgeneticcounsellingresearchaswellaspresentedatnationalandinternationalconferences(inmedicine,socialsciences,geneticcounsellingandhealthcommunication).SheisaUKrepresentativeontheGENDEAFEuropeanConcertedActiongrouponPsychosocialIssuesRelatingtoGeneticDeafness(2002-2005),andamemberoftheUKAssociationofGeneticNursesandCounsellors;electedbytheAGNCmembershipontotheGeneticCounsellorRegistrationBoardfortheUKin2004and2006-2010actedintheroleofVice-Chair.
