JohnUpdikewasbornin1932,inShillington,Pennsylvania.HegraduatedfromHarvardCollegein1954,andspentayearinOxford,England,attheRuskinSchoolofDrawingandFineArt.From1955to1957hewasamemberofthestaffofTheNewYorker.Heistheauthorofmorethanfiftybooks,includingcollectionsofshortstories,poems,essays,andcriticism.HisnovelshavewonthePulitzerPrize(twice),theNationalBookAward,theNationalBookCriticsCircleAward,andtheHowellsMedal.,,
