OrganizedbytheInternationalAssociationforStructuralControl(IASC),andsponsoredbytheEuropeanAssociationfortheControlofStructures(EACS),therecentworldconferenceonstructuralcontrol(3WCSC)broughttogetherengineers,scientists,architects,buildersandotherpractitionersinterestedinthegeneralfieldsofactive,hybridandpassivevibrationcontrol,healthmonitoringanddamagedetection,intelligent/smartmaterialsandsystems.Applicationsincludedbuildings,bridges,spacestructuresandcivilinfrastructuresundertheactionofdynamicenvironments(earthquake,wind,traffic…)andman–madeloads.Itprovidedavaluableforumforthediscussionofthemostpressingconcernsinstructuralcontrolanditsrelatedtopics.Theconferencecoveredawiderangeoftopicsincludingactiveandsemi–activecontroldevices,passivecontroldevices,controlalgorithmsforlinearandnon–linearsystems,modelingandidentificationofstructuralsystems,sensors,healthmonitoringanddamagedetection,benchmarktestofbuildingandbridges,innovativematerialsforstructuralcontrol,applicationstoaerospacestructures,applicationstobridges,applicationstocriticalstructures,externaldynamicforcecharacteristicsandcontrollabilityissues,implicationsofseveregroundmotions,windforces,codesforstructuralcontrol,andsoforth.Suchcomprehensivetreatmentofthemostinnovativedevelopmentsinstructuralcontrolwillmakethesevolumesaninformativereferenceforallresearchersandengineersinterestedinthisarea.ProceedingsoftheUS–EuropeWorkshopOnSensorsandSmartStructuresTechnologyComoandSommaLombardo,ItalyInthelastfewyears,significantprogresshasbeenmadeintheareaofsensingtechnologyandstructuralhealthmonitoring/conditionassessmentintheUSandEurope.Innovativeconceptsinvolvingnewhardware,algorithms,andsoftwarehavebeenproposed.Therehavealsobeenseveralfull–scaletrialimplementationsofdenselysensor–instrumentedinfrastructuresandhealthmonitoringsystems,aswellascasestudiesonbridgesinEuropeandintheUS.MuchcanbelearntthroughUS/Europeancollaborationintheareaofexperimentalverificationonsmall,medium,largeandfull–scaleprojects.Moreover,acommonframeworkforexpandedfuturejointresearchcanbedevelopedontheincreasedunderstandingachievedthroughmutuallearning.Thisworkshopconsistedofseminarsessionsonseveralthemeswhichincludedinnovativesensinghardware,advancesinwirelesstechnology,anddamagedetection/characterizationandconditionassessmentmethodologies.Inaddition,therewereseveralworkshopsessionsdevotedtosummarizingthestatusofthesensorsandsmartstructurestechnologiesinthesetopics,identifyingthecompellingresearchissues,andformulatinganactionplanwithrecommendationsfordevelopmentandimplementationthroughpossiblecollaborativeresearchprojectsandsharingofscientificdata.
