E.M.Forster(1879-1970)wasanotedEnglishauthorandcriticandamemberoftheBloomsburygroup.Hisfirstnovel,WhereAngelsFearToTreadappearedin1905.TheLongestJourneyappearedin1907followedbyARoomWithAView(1908),basedpartlyonthematerialfromextendedholidaysinItalywithhismother.HowardsEnd(1910)wasastorythatcenteredonanEnglishcountryhouseanddealtwiththeclashbetweentwofamilies,oneinterestedinartandliterature,theotheronlyinbusiness.Mauricewasrevisedseveraltimesduringhislife,andfinallypublishedposthumouslyin1971.SirFrankKermodeisthefirstliterarycritictobeknightedsinceEmpsonandiswidelyacknowledgedastheheadoftheprofessioninthiscountry.HisbooksincludeASenseofanEndgin,hisautobiography,NotEntitled,PleasingMyself,andthebest-sellingShakespeare'sLanguage.
