FrancesHodgsonBurnettwasborninManchester,England,onNovember241849.Afterherfather'sdeathin1853,Burnett'smotherranthefamily'sironfoundryuntiltheAmericanCivilWarcausedthebusinesstofail.Destitute,theHodgsonsmovedtoTennesseein1865tostaywithrelativesinalogcabin.Franceslivedthereuntil1873,whenshemarriedadoctor,SwanBurnett,whomshelaterdivorcedin1898.ShemarriedPeterTownsend,anactor,in1900.FromherteensFranceshadwrittenstoriesandtalestohelphersupportthefamilyandlaterclaimednevertohavewrittenamanuscriptthatwasnotpublished.HerfirstwidespreadsuccesscamewithThatLasso'Lowrie'sin1877,ataleoftheLancashirecoalmines.ButitwasthepublicationofLittleLordFauntleroy,in1886,thatbroughttheauthorfameandwealthandestablishedCedricasthemodelforagenerationsofyoungboys.SaraCrewewaspublishedin1888,andtherags-to-richesstorywassosuccessfulthatBurnettrevised,expanded,andrepublisheditin1905asALittlePrincess.ThebelovedTheSecretGardenappearedfouryearslatertoenormouscriticalandpopularacclaim.Aprolificwriter,FrancesHodgsonBurnettwroteover40novelsandplaysanddozensofshortstoriesduringherlifetime.ShediedatPlandome,NewYork,onOctober291924.
