TowardanArchitectureofEnjoymentisthefirstpublicationinanylanguageoftheonlybookdevotedtoarchitecturebyHenriLefebvre.Writtenin1973butonlyrecentlydiscoveredinaprivatearchive,thisworkextendsLefebvre’sinfluentialtheoryofurbanspacetothequestionofarchitecture.Takingthepracticesandperspectiveofhabitationashisstartingplace,Lefebvreredefinesarchitectureasamodeofimaginationratherthanaspecializedprocessoracollectionofmonuments.Hecallsforanarchitectureofjouissance—ofpleasureorenjoyment—centeredonthebodyanditsrhythmsandbasedonthepossibilitiesofthesenses.
ExaminingarchitecturalexamplesfromtheRenaissancetothepostwarperiod,Lefebvreinvestigatesthebodilypleasuresofmovinginandaroundbuildingsandmonuments,urbanspaces,andgardensandlandscapes.Hearguesthatareasdedicatedtoenjoyment,sensuality,anddesireareimportantsitesforasocietypassingbeyondindustrialmodernization.
Lefebvre’stheoriesonspaceandurbanizationfundamentallyreshapedthewayweunderstandcities.TowardanArchitectureofEnjoymentpromisesasimilarimpactonhowwethinkabout,andlivewithin,architecture.
