CorneliusRyanwasbornin1920inDublin,Ireland,wherehewasraised.Hebecameoneofthepreeminentwarcorrespondentsofhistime,flyingfourteenbombingmissionswiththeEighthandNinthU.S.AirForcesandcoveringtheD-DaylandingsandtheadvanceofGeneralPatton'sThirdArmyacrossFranceandGermany.AftertheendofhostilitiesinEurope,hecoveredthePacificWar.InadditiontohisclassicworksTheLongestDay,TheLastBattle,andABridgeTooFar,heistheauthorofnumerousotherbooks,whichhaveappearedthroughouttheworldin19languages.AwardedtheLegionofHonorbytheFrenchgovernmentin1973,Mr.RyanwashailedatthattimebyMalcolmMuggeridgeas"perhapsthemostbrilliantreporternowalive."Hediedin1976.
