Growingup,JerrySpinelliwasreallyseriousaboutbaseball.HeplayedfortheGreenSoxLittleLeagueteaminhishometownofNorristown,Pennsylvania,anddreamedofonedayplayingforthemajorleagues,preferablyasshortstopfortheNewYorkYankees.Onenightduringhighschool,Spinelliwatchedthefootballteamwinanexcitinggameagainstoneofthebestteamsinthecountry.Whileeveryoneelserodeabouttowntootinghornsincelebration,Spinelliwenthomeandwrote“GoaltoGo,”apoemaboutthegame’sdefiningmoment,agoal-linestand.HisfathersubmittedthepoemtotheNorristownTimes–Heraldanditwasfeaturedinthemiddleofthesportspageafewdayslater.Hethentradedinhisbaseballbatforapencil,becauseheknewthathewantedtobecomeawriter.AftergraduatingfromGettysburgCollegewithanEnglishdegree,Spinelliworkedfulltimeasamagazineeditor.Everydayonhislunchhour,hewouldclosehisofficedoorandcraftnovelsonyellowmagazinecopypaper.Hewrotefouradultnovelsin12yearsoflunchtimewriting,butnoneofthesewereacceptedforpublication.Whenhesubmittedafifthnovelabouta13-year-oldboy,adultpublishersonceagainrejectedhiswork,butchildren’spublishersembracedit.Spinellifeelsthatheaccidentallybecameanauthorofchildren’sbooks.
