GeorgesProsperRemi(22May1907–3March1983),betterknownbythepennameHergé,wasaBelgiancomicswriterandartist.Hisbestknownandmostsubstantialworkisthe23completedcomicbooksinTheAdventuresofTintinseries,whichhewroteandillustratedfrom1929untilhisdeathin1983,althoughhewasalsoresponsibleforotherwellknowncomicbookseriessuchasQuick&Flupke(1930–1940)andJo,ZetteandJocko(1936–1957).Bornintoamiddle-classfamilyinEtterbeek,Brussels,hetookakeeninterestinScoutinginearlylife,somethingthatwouldprovehighlyinfluentialonhislaterwork.InitiallyproducingillustrationsforBelgianScoutingmagazines,in1927hebeganworkingfortheconservativewingnewspaperLeXXeSiècle,whereheadoptedthepenname"Hergé",basedupontheFrenchpronunciationof"RG",hisinitialsreversed.Itwashere,in1929,thathebeganserialisingthefirstoftheAdventuresofTintin,TintinintheLandoftheSoviets.ThenotablequalitiesoftheTintinstoriesincludetheirvividhumanism,arealisticfeelproducedbymeticulousandwiderangingresearch,andHergé'sligneclairedrawingstyle.Adultreadersenjoythemanysatiricalreferencestothehistoryandpoliticsofthe20thcentury.TheBlueLotus,forexample,wasinspiredbytheMukdenincidentthatledtotheChinese-JapaneseWarof1934.KingOttokar'sSceptrecouldbereadagainstthebackgroundofHitler'sAnschlussorinthecontextofthestrugglebetweentheRomanianIronGuardandtheKingofRomania,CarolII;whilstlateralbumssuchasTheCalculusAffairdepicttheColdWar.HergéhasbecomeoneofthemostfamousBelgiansworldwideandTintinisstillaninternationalsuccess.Hergéisaprominentnationalheroinhisnativecountry,totheextentwherehehasbeendescribedastheactual"personificationofBelgium".Thelong-awaitedHergéMuseumwasopenedinLouvain-La-Neuveon2June2009.DesignedbyPritzkerPrize-winningarchitectChristiandePortzamparc,themuseumreflectsHergé'shugecorpusofworkwhichhas,untilnow,beensittinginstudiosandbankvaults.Hisworkremainsastronginfluenceoncomics,particularlyinEurope.HewasinductedintotheComicBookHallofFamein2003.
