ErnestHemingwaywasbornin1899.Hisfatherwasadoctorandhewasthesecondofsixchildren.TheirhomewasatOakPark,aChicagosuburb.In1917,HemingwayjoinedtheKansasCityStarasacubreporter.Thefollowingyear,hevolunteeredasanambulancedriverontheItalianfront,wherehewasbadlywoundedbutdecoratedforhisservices.HereturnedtoAmericain1919,andmarriedin1921.In1922,hereportedontheGreco-Turkishwarbeforeresigningfromjournalismtodevotehimselftofiction.HesettledinPariswhereherenewedhisearlierfriendshipswithsuchfellow-AmericanexpatriatesasEzraPoundandGertrudeStein.Theirencouragementandcriticismweretoplayavaluablepartintheformationofhisstyle.Hemingway'sfirsttwopublishedworkswereThreeStoriesandTenPoemsandInOurTimebutitwasthesatiricalnovel,TheTorrentsofSpring,thatestablishedhisnamemorewidely.Hisinternationalreputationwasfirmlysecuredbyhisnextthreebooks;Fiesta,MenWithoutWomenandAFarewelltoArms.Hewaspassionatelyinvolvedwithbullfighting,big-gamehuntinganddeep-seafishingandhiswritingreflectedthis.HevisitedSpainduringtheCivilWaranddescribedhisexperiencesinthebestseller,ForWhomtheBellTolls.Hisdirectanddeceptivelysimplestyleofwritingspawnedgenerationsofimitatorsbutnoequals.Recognitionofhispositionincontemporaryliteraturecamein1954whenhewasawardedtheNobelPrizeforLiterature,followingthepublicationofTheOldManandtheSea.Hediedin1961.,,
