OneofGreece’smostprolificandwidelytranslatedpoets,YannisRitsos(1909-1999)wasborninMonemvasia.Helosthismotherandanolderbrothertotuberculosiswhenhewasyoung,andlatercontractedthediseasehimself.Alifelong,committedCommunist,hefoughtintheGreekResistancetotheAxisoccupation,sidedwiththeCommunistsintheGreekCivilWar,andsubsequentlyspentyearsindetentioncentersandcampsforpoliticalprisoners.Thedictatorshipof1967-1974landedhimininternalexileyetagain.Despitethesemanyobstacles,Ritsoswrotemorethanahundredvolumesofpoetry,plays,andtranslations.In1976hewasawardedtheLeninPeacePrize.KarenEmmerich’stranslationsfromtheGreekincludebooksbyMargaritaKarapanou,AmandaMichalopoulou,ErsiSotiropoulos,andVassilisVassilikos.HertranslationsofPoems(1945-1971)byMiltosSachtouriswasnominatedforaNationalBookCriticsCircleAwardinPoetry.ShehasreceivedtranslationgrantsandawardsfromPEN,theNationalEndowmentfortheHumanities,andtheModernGreekStudiesAssociation.SheisonthefacultyoftheDepartmentofComparativeLiteratureattheUniversityofOregon.EdmundKeeleyistheCharlesBarnwellStrautProfessorofEnglishEmeritusandtheDirectorEmeritusoftheCreativeWritingProgramatPrincetonUniversity.HiscollaborativetranslationsofthemodernGreekpoets,includingC.P.CavafyandtheNobellaureatesGeorgeSeferisandOdysseasElytis,receivedthePEN/RalphManheimMedalforTranslation,andhistranslationsofYannisRitsosearnedhimtheHaroldMortonLandonTranslationAwardoftheAcademyofAmericanPoetsandtheFirstEuropeanPrizefortheTranslationofPoetry.In1999hereceivedanAcademyAwardinLiteraturefromtheAmericanAcademyofArtsandLetters.,,,,
