SovietphysicistLevDavidovichLandau(1908–68)mademanycontributionstotheoreticalphysics,includingtheco-discoveryofthedensitymatrixmethodinquantummechanics.Hereceivedthe1962NobelPrizeinPhysicsforhisdevelopmentofamathematicaltheoryofsuperfluidity.
ProminenttheoristYakovAbramovichSmorodinsky(1917–92)workedatMoscow'sKurchatovInstituteandtheJointInstituteofNuclearResearch,Dubna.Hischiefinterestsinvolvedtheapplicationofideasfromalgebraandgeometrytonuclearandparticlephysics.,,,
