GertrudeChandlerWarner(April16,1890-August29,1979)wasanAmericanauthor,mainlyofchildren'sstories.ShewasmostfamousforbeginningthepopularBoxcarChildrenbookseries.BorninPutnam,Connecticut,Warnerdreamedofbeingafamousauthorfromtheageoffive.HerfavoritebookwasAlice'sAdventuresinWonderland.Beinginamusicalfamily,shewasalmostpredisposedtoplayaninstrument;inhercase,shechosethecello,andherfatherboughtheracellokitatayoungage.However,becauseofherfrequentillness,Warnerneverfinishedhighschool.Afterleavinginhersophomoreyear,shelearnedfromatutorandfinishedhersecondaryeducation.In1918,whileshewasteachingSundaySchool,Warnerwascalledtoteachfirstgrade,mainlybecausemaleteacherswerebeingcalledtoserveinWorldWarI.ShethoughtuptheBoxcarChildrenwhileathome,sick.Thestorieswereperfectforchildren,especiallythemajority(atleastinherclass)whodidnotspeakEnglishverywell.Shewascriticizedfordisplayingchildrenwithlittleparentalsupervision;hercriticsthoughtthatthiswouldencouragechildrebellion.Herresponsewas,however,thatthechildrenlikeditforthatveryreason.Theserieswasoriginallypublishedin1924;theeditionsmostpeoplearefamiliarwithwerepublishedbyScottForesman,startingin1942.Today,AlbertWhitman&Companypublishestheextremelypopularseriesof19stories.Otherauthorshavecontributedtotheseries,addingapproximately90bookstotheseries.Inherlaterlife,beforeshediedatage89,WarnerbecameavolunteerfortheAmericanRedCrossandassistedothercharitableorganizations.RobertPappisapublishedauthorandanillustratorofchildren'sbooks
