DanielDefoe(c.1660-1731),oneofthemostfamouswritersinEnglishliterature,wasborninLondon,thesonofJamesFoe,abutcher.ItwasDanielwhochangedhisnametoDeFoeorDefoeinabout1705.HewasinterestedinpoliticsandopposedKingJamesII.AftertheGloriousRevolutionin1688andWilliamIIIwasonthethrone,Defoebecameoneofhispersonalfriends.Hebecameawriterforthegovernmentandasatircalwriteronvarioussocialissuesofthetime.HeturnedtofulltimewritingafterhearingtheinspirationalstoryofasailorwhowasrescuedafterlivingaloneonadesertislandinthePacific,theresultbeinghisfirstnovelROBINSONCRUSOE.Severalotheradventurestoriesfollowed,includingMOLLFLANDERS.--ThistextreferstoanalternatePaperbackedition.
