EdwardOttiscurrentlyonthefacultyoftheUniversityofMarylandwhereheholdsthetitleofDistinguishedUniversityProfessorofPhysicsandofElectricalandComputerEngineering.BeforecomingtoMarylandin1979,hewasaProfessorofElectricalEngineeringatCornellUniversity(1968–1979).Prof.Ott'searlyresearchwasonplasmaphysicsandchargedparticlebeams,includingresearchonspaceplasmas,fusionplasmas,intenseionbeams,andelectromagneticwavegenerationbyelectronbeams.Sincetheearly1980s,Prof.Ott'smainresearchinterestshavebeeninnonlineardynamicsanditsapplicationstoproblemsinscienceandengineering.Someofthisworkincludescontributionsintheareasofbifurcationsofchaoticsets,thefractaldimensionofstrangeattractors,thestructureofbasinboundaries,applicationsofchaoticdynamicstoproblemsinfluidsandplasmas,andthecontrolandsynchronizationofchaos.Prof.Otthasalsobeenactiveintheeducationofstudentsinnonlineardynamics.Heisanauthorofover300researcharticlesinscientificjournals.
