JackLondonwasborninSanFranciscoin1876,thesonofanunmarriedspiritualist,FloraWellmann,wholaterwedJohnLondon,aCivilWarveteran.MuchofJack'schildhoodwasspentindelinquency,andafterseveraltemporaryitinerantjobs,hetookpartintheKlondikeGoldRushin1897.Eventhoughthetripwasnotasuccess,hedrewonhisexperiencestowritepowerfulstories.Oneofthese,TheCalloftheWild,broughthimfameasanauthor,althoughheremainedfinanciallyinsecurefortherestofhislife.Hediedin1916leavingbehindanarrayofbooksonanastonishingrangeofsubjects.
