JosephConradMostreadersknowJosephConradforcreatingMarlow'sharrowingjourneythroughtheAfricanCongoinHeartofDarkness.Conradwasadeptatcapturingthephysicalandculturalexperienceshegleanedfrom15yearsatsea,buthealsowrotepoliticalthrillers,essays,andplaysbasedonhisownshortstories.Hisbestworkstendtobebrief,butpackinaremarkableperspicacityabouthumanity'sdeepestfaults.BiographyJosephConrad(originallyJózefTeodorKonradNaleczKorzeniowski)wasbornintheUkrainein1857andgrewupunderTsaristautocracy.Hisparents,ardentPolishpatriots,diedwhenhewasachild,followingtheirexileforanti-Russianactivities,andhecameundertheprotectionofhistradition-consciousuncle,ThaddeusBobrowski,whowatchedoverhimforthenexttwenty-fiveyears.In1874Bobrowskiconcededtohisnephew'spassionatedesiretogotosea,andConradtravelledtoMarseilles,whereheservedinFrenchmerchantvesselsbeforejoiningaBritishshipin1878asanapprentice.In1886heobtainedBritishnationalityandhisMaster'scertificateintheBritishMerchantService.Eightyearslaterhelefttheseatodevotehimselftowriting,publishinghisfirstnovel,Almayer'sFolly,in1895.ThefollowingyearhemarriedJessieGeorgeandeventuallysettledinKent,whereheproducedwithinfifteenyearssuchmodernclassicsasYouth,HeartofDarkness,LordJim,Typhoon,Nostromo,TheSecretAgentandUnderWesternEyes.Hecontinuedtowriteuntilhisdeathin1924.TodayConradisgenerallyregardedasoneofthegreatestwritersoffictioninEnglish--histhirdlanguage.Heoncedescribedhimselfasbeingconcerned"withtheidealvalueofthings,eventsandpeople"inthePrefacetoTheNiggeroftheNarcissushedefinedhistaskas"bythepowerofthewrittenword...beforeall,tomakeyousee."AuthorbiographycourtesyofPenguinGroup(USA).
