WashingtonIrvingwasborninNewYorkin1873,thesonofaBritishmerchantandtheyoungestofelevenchildren.Hetrainedasalawyer,butpractisedonlybriefly,preferringtoworkasajournalistandwriterofessaysandpoems,someofwhichwerepublishedasabook,Salmagundi,in1808.In1809,heintroducedtheeccentricDutchcharacterDietrichKnickerbocker,supposedlyacollctorofstoriesandahistorianoftheDutchregimeinNewYork.TheSketchBook,publishedin1820,containedessaysaboutlifeinEngland,whichIrvinghasrecentlyvisited,aswellasadaptationsofGermanfolktales,amongthemRipVanWinkleandTheLegendofSpleepyHollow,whichwonhiminternationalfame.IrvingwasappointeddiplomaticattachetoSpain(1826-9),thensecretarytotheUSLegationinLondon(1829-32).Hecontinuedtowrite,andhislaterworksincludedLegendsoftheAlhambra(1832),ATourofthePrairies(1835)andafive-volumebiographyofGeorgeWashington,ofwhichthefirstvolumewaspublishedin1855andthelastin1859,theyearofIrving'sdeath.
